THE CARNIVAL IN BRAZIL
The Carnival is the most famous and popular holiday in Brazil. It starts on Friday and ends on Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Each city in Brazil has its owner Carnival, but the Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival is the most known around the world. Every year the “schools samba” prepare their carnival parade to tell a story through the music, costumes and floats, mainly in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The parades occur in a special space called “sambódramo”, where the people watch the performances. The “schools samba” compete with each other and on Wednesday is announced which school is the winner.
In other cities, like Recife and Olinda, the parades are on the streets with the traditional giant puppets, about 4 meters high. This region has a typical kind of music: the frevo. Frevo is an exciting type of music to witch the people dance very fast with acrobatic moves and colorful small umbrellas.
The city of Salvador has a famous carnival too. It is the birthplace of the many axé singers, a hot and excited rhythm. The people go to the streets and follow the popular Trio Elétrico, a truck with powerful speakers and a stage where the singers make their shows.
Despite the different ways to celebrate the carnival in Brazil, they all have the same essence: have fun, excited musics and happy days! It is celebrated on a different date each year between February and beginning of March. Next year's carnival will be on 9th-14th February 2018.
